Septic Systems

In Washtenaw County, the Washtenaw County Department of Environmental Health approves septic systems in most townships of the county.

The Conservation District has soils information that can give you a general idea if the soils on a specific parcel of land may be suitable for a septic system. But, for approval of a site, you will need to contact the Department of Environmental Health.

Using native plants around and over septic systems can be an alternative to lawn grasses. Here are two publications that can help you in planning landscaping with native plants over septic systems.
