Forestry Assistance Program
Our Forestry Assistance Program is designed to provide information, education and technical assistance to private landowners, both urban and rural, and local governments to allow them to better understand, plan, manage, protect and utilize their forest resources.
Program objectives include:
Education & Outreach
Through written articles and public workshops, presentations and demonstrations, educate landowners and municipalities on:
- Determining the value of their trees/forest resources
- Tree species selection for planting windbreaks, reforestation, wildlife habitat establishment & enhancement
- Tree planting techniques and maintenance
- Urban tree care techniques
- Urban and rural forest health issues and management options
Urban Forestry Assistance
Assist urban landowners and local municipalities with:
- Individual tree management and care
- Urban forest management and planning
- Tree insect and disease management recommendations and referrals
- Hazard tree assessment
Forest Management
Assist private landowners with use & management of forested land through:
- Forest health assessments
- Woodlot management recommendations & plan development
- Tree insect and disease management recommendations and referrals
- Tree Farm inspection/certification
- Timber sale assessment and marketing support
- Referrals to consulting foresters and timber buyers for timber sale assistance
Timber Stand Improvement
For a fee, the District Forester is available to mark trees in a woodlot for a non-commercial tree removal or thinning, to improve the health, financial value, growth rate, and wildlife habitat of the woodlot.
Demonstration Sites
Since 2001, a conservation demonstration site has been managed, and is available to the public to see first hand, different techniques of weed control and animal control on tree planting projects, as well as a recently established prairie planting.
