Our dedicated volunteers are an invaluable part of work we do at the District. There are several ways to get involved depending on your interests, time and goals!

2) Associate Director: Assist with the long-term capacity building of the WCCD by serving as a non-voting board director. This is an opportunity to learn more about the governing body of the WCCD. Commitment requires monthly board meetings and serving on a committee.

Recipients of the "Volunteer of the Year" Award
Each year we honor a Volunteer of the Year with an award to thank them for their dedication to helping Washtenaw County Conservation District.
2023 Helen PetersIn 2023, many volunteers stepped up to make all our events a success, but one individual stood out with consistency, dedication, and humor to every event in 2023: Helen Peters! Helen Peters, named Volunteer of the Year, is well deserved for her outstanding commitment to community involvement and the mission of conservation. She continues to emulate dependability throughout WCCD tree, shrub, and native plant distributions by providing strategic feedback, adaptability, proactive thinking, and leadership. Following in her mother’s footsteps for her love of volunteerism, Helen is a proud local residing in her childhood home in Ann Arbor. Her enthusiasm and love for serving her community is contagious. We fully appreciated the knowledge, humor, and energy that they bring to the work.
On behalf of the Washtenaw County Conservation District, thank you, Helen! |
2022 Kathy & Norm FisherKathy is a retired nurse and Norm is a retired teacher living in York Township. If you know Kathy & Norm, you will know them to be some of the kindest, hardworking, considerate, and positive people. This pair is very deserving of this recognition for not only the time any effort they contribute to our events, but for all that they give to the community beyond WCCD.
In 1970 they began purchasing and planting trees. Originally their property was a field, but now they have many 50-ft tall trees. After volunteering with York Township Parks for 15 years, the pair was looking for new opportunities and began volunteering with us about 4 years ago. Kathy and Norm are people that you can rely on, even when it means that we need help stuffing envelopes or standing in the hot sun directing traffic. They have always supported and encouraged our staff and creating a community of from those who volunteer with us. Their enthusiasm and love for serving their community are contagious. We truly appreciate the knowledge, humor, and energy that they bring to their volunteer efforts! On behalf of the Washtenaw County Conservation District, thank you, Kathy & Norm! |
2021 Linda PrieskornLinda is a retired middle school teacher living in Ann Arbor, and many of us know her as an avid native plant enthusiast! She keeps tending and improving her massive native plant garden in her front and back yards, and has been involved with the WCWRC Master Rain Gardener program for over 8 years. As legend has it, she was asked to help take some photos for the rain gardens, and, in her words: “I’ll do it until I get bored, and that was 8 years ago!” Through the MRG program she has grown as a volunteer by photographing events, coordinating school rain garden events, and supporting the staff for various events, including the Ann Arbor Huron River days.
In 2021, Linda was involved with just about every volunteer opportunity with the WCCD:
On behalf of the Washtenaw County Conservation District, THANK YOU, LINDA! |
