Featured 2022 Native Plant Expo & Marketplace Sponsor:
Natural Community Services is excited to sponsor the 2022 Native Plant Expo & Marketplace and support the growth of native plant communities, stewardship, and education that Washtenaw County embraces. John and Liz Delisle are committed to improving biodiversity through creating sustainable landscapes and conservation of the land, water, and habitat resources we are all connected to.
NCS is a native plants organization at their core and they work throughout Southeast Michigan with public and private clients in urban and rural spaces. They specialize in native landscape projects of all scopes and sizes including design and installation, habitat assessment and restoration, prairie and savanna restoration, invasive species management, rain gardens, butterfly gardens, ecological restoration, green infrastructure, and much more.
John (Primary Ecologist) has been involved with native plants and natural landscapes since he was a kid. He remembers the challenge of looking for native plants at local nurseries and digging through reference books to find out if plants were native. These experiences led John to advanced degrees and certifications in ecology related fields. He has since been involved with a wide variety of projects and programs and has over 20 years of experience working in environmental stewardship. Thirteen years ago, NCS began with the goal of improving biodiversity in local ecosystems and supporting the growing demand for sustainable landscaping and native plant restorations.
NCS strongly believes one of the most important ways to support biodiversity is by removing invasive shrubs and brush. We live in a world of edge effects that have an impact on every native plant. By restoring natural ecosystems and fighting the dispersal of invasive shrubs and vines, brush control lowers maintenance costs while providing a high benefit to biodiversity. These methods of invasive management can have a big impact with little or no herbicide, and John recommends planning for winter invasive shrub control.
With a deep commitment to biodiversity through the conservation and restoration of Michigan ecosystems, NCS uses science and passion to design, build, and maintain native landscapes. As operations expand, they continue their dedication to restore the function, integrity, and beauty of our local ecosystems and add biodiversity to each site.
