Marie of Windy Rock Farm and Nursery will present an "ideas" talk for those desiring to plant for pollinators, but not knowing where to begin or how to select plants that best meet pollinators’ needs throughout the year. Questions explored in this talk will include - How do seasonal bloom patterns provide just what pollinators need at critical stages throughout the year? Where do bees get the protein necessary to ensure successful early spring brood growth? What role do fall blooming wildflowers play in aiding Monarch migration and pollinator over-wintering success? Are all flowering plants the same or what advantages do native species provide for the pollinator gardener?

The 2nd presenter in the Native Plant Expo and Marketplace (NPEM) Speaker Series is Connie Crancer from the Pollinator Partnership, the largest non-profit organization dedicated exclusively to the protection and promotion of pollinators and their ecosystems. Her presentation will address how to enhance and create habitat in our backyards and farms using native plants that not only support native pollinators and other beneficial insects and the ecosystem services they provide, but also support ecological resiliency, healthy soils and water ways and help to mitigate a world-wide insect and pollinator decline crisis. She will include national and state educational, technical and financial resources and opportunities.

January 26th, 2023: Restoring Nature with Prescribed Fire: Why We Burn & How We Do It Safely

For thousands of years, intentional burning of the landscape has been a part of what is now southern Michigan. Dave will discuss the Native American history of fire here, and why burning can be a valuable tool for those interested in restoring native Michigan landscapes. Dave recently retired after 28 years as the Natural Area Preservation Manager for the City of Ann Arbor Parks. Now he can devote more time to his private business, David Borneman, LLC, conducting prescribed burns and doing ecological consulting with a wide range of clients across the Midwest. When he is not burning, Dave is likely either tending to the family cabin in northeast Michigan, or traveling with his wife.

The meeting will also include a presentation on 75 years of conservation at the WCCD, highlighting key leaders and accomplishments; a Distinguished Service Award and Volunteer of the Year Award; and a snapshot of key priorities for the WCCD for 2026. April 2nd, 2022: "Fruit Tree Maintenance & Pruning for Backyard Growers" Workshop

This workshop will help homeowners and hobbyists successfully maintain fruit trees, especially apples. We will cover the basics of fruit tree care and pest management (insects, diseases, weeds, and wildlife) as well as pruning for new and overgrown fruit trees, including an outdoor pruning demonstration. Presenters include: Amy Irish-Brown and Anna Wallis, MSU Extension. Please dress appropriately for the weather - this event will be held in a barn and outside on uneven ground. No public restroom. Speaker, Ron Doetch, who will be discussing his experience in working with the farming community in Washtenaw County. He will be looking at several trends in the industry as well as highlighting some of the changes that have taken place in his time here. Moreover, the talk will look at the importance of water and what can be done to use it more wisely. Finally, Ron will discuss the need to shift away from short term season to season thinking and how producers might transition to a more long-term outlook that promotes conservation and profit. For thousands of years, intentional burning of the landscape has been a part of what is now southern Michigan. Dave will discuss the Native American history of fire here, and why burning can be a valuable tool for those interested in restoring native Michigan landscapes. Dave recently retired after 28 years as the Natural Area Preservation Manager for the City of Ann Arbor Parks. Now he can devote more time to his private business, David Borneman, LLC, conducting prescribed burns and doing ecological consulting with a wide range of clients across the Midwest. When he is not burning, Dave is likely either tending to the family cabin in northeast Michigan, or traveling with his wife.

This workshop will help homeowners and hobbyists successfully maintain fruit trees, especially apples. March 10th, 2021: Building Soil Biology for Resilient Crops Virtual Shoptalk
Wednesday, March 10th from 3-4:30 p.m.
Join us on March 10th at 3 p.m. for a virtual round table discussion on conservation practice successes and challenges throughout our region. This discussion will present an opportunity to interact with neighboring farmers throughout our region. The talk will also feature a presentation and discussion by Joe Scrimger of Bio-Systems, a Battle Creek based soil consulting company focusing on ways to improve crop growth through soil biology. This event is supported by Farmer-Led Conservation, a group of conservation-minded farmers in the Western Lake Erie Basin (WLEB).
March 3rd, 2021: Growing Native Plants for Butterflies Webinar
Wednesday, March 3rd from 6:30-8 p.m.
Author Brenda Dziedzic (Raising Butterflies in the Garden) will present on the necessary components of a garden for butterflies and moths. Select plants for your garden to encourage and support Monarchs, Giant Swallowtails, Cecropias, and Lunas in your landscape. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions. January 21st, 2021: 73rd Virtual Annual Meeting

Join us for our first every virtual annual meeting! Dr. Shikha Singh, Regional Coordinator with the Jackson, Lenawee, Washtenaw Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area (JLW CISMA) will present on the top Invasive Species to watch for in our region! We will also present awards for the 2020 Conservation Farmer of the Year, 2020 Tree Conservationist of the Year and 2020 Beginning Conservation Farmer of the Year. Director Election results will be announced and 2020 reports presented by WCCD Staff and partners.
December 11, 2020: Land Management Planning for Any Property Webinar
MAEAP Technician Nick Machinski assists landowners with how to plan for management on their property. The presentation discusses tools for site evaluation, goal creation and determining a management strategy that fits the landowner's needs. All of these are components of a Land Management Plan which can be used to guide the landowner in implementing their vision onto the landscape. VIEW THE WEBINAR NOW
