Back & bigger than ever, The Native Plant Expo & Marketplace will offer over 100 Michigan native plants from local growers in one convenient location to shop! Learn how to establish and care for native landscapes and connect with businesses specializing in planning and maintaining native plant landscapes. The expo will also feature pollinator resources, conservation groups, and more. Make a day of it at this family friendly event with free admission for all. Hosted by Washtenaw County Conservation District on Saturday, June 4th at the Chelsea Community Fairgrounds from 9am - 1pm. Click here to learn more.

June 12th, 2022: Native Plant Swap

Are you willing to share extra native plants from your yard? Or are you looking for a few native plants to add? Please join us for a native plant swap on June 12, 2022 at the Ypsilanti District Library! All gardeners are welcome to come to this potluck style event whether or not you bring a plant to "pass". If you bring plants to share, please label them. Please bring gloves and a trowel if you would like to help weed and install extra plants along the edges of the detention basin and/or pollinator garden at the Ypsilanti District Library. April 30th, 2022: Community Tree Planting Workshop & Celebration
Saturday, April 30th, 1-4:30 pm 
Appleridge Park,

Join WCCD, ReLeaf Michigan, HRWC, and Ypsilanti Township in support of Willow Run Acres, a local non-profit building a new community garden at Appleridge Park. A brief ceremony will kick-off the event followed by ReLeaf Michigan providing guidance on bare-root tree planting for fruit and nut trees. ​

April 2nd: "Fruit Tree Maintenance & Pruning for Backyard Growers" Workshop
Saturday, April 2nd from 1 – 3 p.m.
Frosty Apple Family Orchard, 
6884 Walsh Rd, Dexter, MI 48130
This workshop will help homeowners and hobbyists successfully maintain fruit trees, especially apples. We will cover the basics of fruit tree care and pest management (insects, diseases, weeds, and wildlife) as well as pruning for new and overgrown fruit trees, including an outdoor pruning demonstration. Presenters include: Amy Irish-Brown and Anna Wallis, MSU Extension. Please dress appropriately for the weather - this event will be held in a barn and outside on uneven ground. No public restroom. Limited capacity, preregistration required, $5 fee supports WCCD's School and Community Habitat Grant. Limited capacity. ​

February 1st: "The Nature of Oaks & Oak Regeneration" Webinar with Doug Tallamy & Michael Kost
Tuesday, February 1st from 6:30 – 8 p.m. on Zoom Webinar
Join us for a virtual discussion about Native Plants with Doug Tallamy, Professor of Agriculture and Natural Resources at University of Delaware and author of Nature's Best Hope and The Nature of Oaks, and Michael Kost, lead ecologist / senior conservation scientist with Michigan Natural Features Inventory and co-author of 3 books on the natural communities of Michigan. 

January 27th: Waterbody Health: Benefits of Natural/Living Shorelines Webinar

Are you concerned about the water quality in your stream or lake? Frustrated by nuisance geese along your lake shoreline? Fed up with algal blooms or an eroding shoreline? Come learn how natural, living shorelines can protect water quality, be aesthetically pleasing, deter nuisance wildlife, and stabilize your shoreline.  Presenter Erick Elgin is an aquatic ecologist and water resources educator with Michigan State University Extension.

January 20th: WCCD 74th Annual Meeting
Thursday, January 20, 2022 at 6:30 p.m., Zoom Webinar
Dr. Asia Dowtin, Assistant Professor of Urban and Community Forestry at Michigan State University, will present on trees and green infrastructure in urban spaces.  Conservation awards will be presented for outstanding commitment to applying conservation on the ground.  2021 highlights will be presented by the WCCD staff and partners. The district director election will be held and results will be announced. 

January 14th: "Kiss the Ground" Film, Live Viewing
Friday, January 14th, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
455 W. Main St, Manchester MI (Acorn Farmers Market & Cafe)

We are partnering with Acorn Farmers Market & Cafe for a live showing of "Kiss the Ground" the movie narrated by Woody Harrelson. Released in September of 2020 on Netflix, this full-length documentary sheds light on a “new, old approach” to farming called regenerative agriculture, a practice with the extraordinary ability to balance our climate and feed the world.

January 11th: "Winter Woody Plant Identification" Webinar with Martha Holzheuer
Tuesday, January 11th, 6-7:30pm. Zoom Webinar
Join us for a virtual talk led by Martha Holzheuer, a landscape ecologist and owner of Nature Niche LLC. The talk focus on winter identification of common invasive and native shrub species that can be managed over the winter months, followed by a Q&A session with special guest, JLW CISMA Coordinator, Dr. Shikha Singh. 

December 18th: Ag Tire Drop-Off
Saturday, December 18th, time 9 a.m. to noon.

Partnering with WC Public Works, Washtenaw CD is offering our first Ag Tire Drop-Off Day. Bring your agricultural tires for recycling.  Limit of 4 tires per producer. 


 December 11th: Agronomist Presentation: Improving Profitability Through Land Stewardship: Lessons from the Field
Saturday, December 11th, time 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Organized in Partnership with Huron River Watershed Council & River Raisin Watershed Council. S
peaker, Ron Doetch, who will be discussing his experience in working with the farming community in Washtenaw County. He will be looking at several trends in the industry as well as highlighting some of the changes that have taken place in his time here. Moreover, the talk will look at the importance of water and what can be done to use it more wisely. Finally, Ron will discuss the need to shift away from short term season to season thinking and how producers might transition to a more long-term outlook that promotes conservation and profit. Live recording of the event will be available on our Facebook page. Refreshments provided. 

November 15th-19th: Soil Test Drive
Monday, November 15th through Friday November 19th, time 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Drop off you soil samples to be sent to MSUE Soil Lab to be analyzed. Receive feedback on how to amend your soil! 

November 13th: Forest Forensics Field Experience

Join us and MSU Extension for this Forestry Field Tour through the wooded trails of one of the largest nature preserves in Washtenaw County.

​October 13th: Invasive Species Training Seminar

Dr. Shikha Singh, JLW CISMA Invasive Species Coordinator will present on how invasive species can reduce biodiversity, damage infrastructure, and hinder management activities. Learn more about what invasive species are, identify commonly found invasive species, and some that are nearby.  We will also cover basic management methods, equipment decontamination, and environmental considerations when using pesticides. RSVP by October 8th. Contact: shikha.singh@macd.org, 517-395–2089.

Sept 8 - Nov 10: MSUE Conservation Stewards Program
10 Wednesday two-hour sessions virtually.
The WCCD is a partner in the Washtenaw cohort of this educational program that explores the foundations of conservation in Michigan and its diverse terrestrial, wetland and aquatic ecosystems and natural communities. June 26th: Manchester Tire Collection Event 
Saturday, June 26th from 9 a.m - 12 p.m.
Manchester Township Office, 275 S. Macomb Street, Manchester, MI
The Conservation District in cooperation with Washtenaw County Water Resources Commissioner's Office and Manchester Township is offering a tire drop off event! Only 10 tires accepted per residence and no more than 1 trip per vehicle or residence. No semi-truck or agricultural tires are accepted. More information can be found here. ​

June 5th: 2nd Annual Native Plant Expo & Marketplace
Saturday, June 5th from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.
Washtenaw Farm Council Grounds, 5055 Ann Arbor-Saline Rd, Ann Arbor 48103 
The Native Plant Expo & Marketplace is set for June 5th.  A selection of native plant nurseries, nonprofits and native ecosystems landscapers will be available for a limited number of attendees. The Expo is free and open to the public but will require attendees to reserve a ticket. Visit our website for updates on vendors and safety measures. The native plant distribution for all pre-orders will also be hosted at the Farm Council Grounds at this time from Building B.

June 5th: Fish Stock Day

The Conservation District in cooperation with Harrietta Hills Trout Farm sponsors Fish Day events for the purchase of fish to stock ponds each spring.

Each spring and fall the Conservation District sells a variety of trees, shrubs, wildflowers and prairie grasses which are intended for conservation uses Pre-order by mail or on our website.

March 10th: Building Soil Biology for Resilient Crops Virtual Shoptalk
Wednesday, March 10th from 3-4:30 p.m.  
Join us on March 10th at 3 p.m. for a virtual round table discussion on conservation practice successes and challenges throughout our region. This discussion will present an opportunity to interact with neighboring farmers throughout our region. The talk will also feature a presentation and discussion by Joe Scrimger of Bio-Systems, a Battle Creek based soil consulting company focusing on ways to improve crop growth through soil biology. This event is supported by Farmer-Led Conservation, a group of conservation-minded farmers in the Western Lake Erie Basin (WLEB). ​

March 3rd: Growing Native Plants for Butterflies Webinar
Wednesday, March 3rd from 6:30-8 p.m.  
Author Brenda Dziedzic 
(Raising Butterflies in the Garden) will present on the necessary components of a garden for butterflies and moths. Select plants for your garden to encourage and support Monarchs, Giant Swallowtails, Cecropias, and Lunas in your landscape. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions. February 17th: Planning and Design for Native Plant Gardens Webinar
Wednesday, February 17th from 2-3:30 p.m.
Vern Stephens of Designs By Nature LLC will present details on how to select a site and design for various types of native gardens. Participants will have the opportunity to ask Vern questions. A link to the webinar will be emailed to you prior to the date.

January 21st: 73rd Virtual Annual Meeting
Thursday, January 21st, 6:30PM-8PM
Join us for our first every virtual annual meeting! Dr. Shikha Singh, Regional Coordinator with the Jackson, Lenawee, Washtenaw Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area (JLW CISMA) will present on the top Invasive Species to watch for in our region! We will also present awards for the 2020 Conservation Farmer of the Year, 2020 Tree Conservationist of the Year and 2020 Beginning Conservation Farmer of the Year. Director Election results will be announced and 2020 reports presented by WCCD Staff and partners.


December 11, 2020: Land Management Planning for Any Property Webinar
MAEAP Technician Nick Machinski assists landowners with how to plan for management on their property. The presentation discusses tools for site evaluation, goal creation and determining a management strategy that fits the landowner's needs. All of these are components of a Land Management Plan which can be used to guide the landowner in implementing their vision onto the landscape.   VIEW THE WEBINAR NOW
